College Financial Aid

There is no doubt about it - college can be a major drain on finances before, during and after the time actually spent in a classroom. We hope the resources here will help you find some relief, whether you are planning ahead, currently in college or managing school debt since graduation.

The types of help are varied as are the sources - the federal government, state governments, local governments and other public as well as private institutions. Just sifting through the many options may seem overwhelming, but it is manageable.

The financial scene is complex, not to mention ever changing, so what follows is not meant to be exhaustive, but it is a good place to start. The best approach is to develop an idea of your specific needs, get an overall view of the options and then pursue the most promising sources. This will usually involve a combination of several types of aid.

  Scholarships
Scholarships come in many shapes and sizes. Both requirements and features vary according to the program. Generally, a Scholarship is awarded to a student for excellence in an academic or other area. If possible, you may wish to focus on ones which hold a particular advantage for you, such as those based on financial need, ethnic background or performance. Scholarships are gifts, not loans. There is no expectation of repayment. More Scholarship information.
  Grants
Like Scholarships, Grants are not loans and require no repayment. Unlike Scholarships, Grants are often less tied to academic excellence and determined more by financial need, although requirements do vary.
  Student Loans
Student Loans are just what they sound like. They are loans - don't forget you will need to pay back this debt, with interest. However, most loan programs designed for students at least have the advantage of being more favorable than some other types of loans.
  Work Study Programs
It would be nice to live in a study bubble and not be required to engage in the "real world" until graduation. For some that may be possible. For many, it simply isn't. So, you need to work, at least part time. Various Work Study Programs, Internships, etc. are made available by government and private institutions to assist students with work that not only generates income but is appropriate and flexible for the college schedule.
  Fellowships
If you are at the graduate level of school, another option may be a Fellowship. Once again, these vary and deserve some research. If your particular circumstance is appropriate, a Fellowship may be just the ticket to further your study and career goals.
